Greenhouse fire causes blasts, closes road near Hammonton

Fire-Rescue News

Winslow greenhouse fire

Posted: Sunday, March 23, 2014 10:00 am

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP — Crews are investigating a fire at a wholesale greenhouse Saturday night on Mays Landing Road that destroyed the building and briefly touched off a forest fire.

When firefighters arrived at County Line Greenhouse about 8:15 p.m., they found it fully involved, said fire investigator Michael Scardino.

"There were multiple explosions" and a second alarm, he said.

It drew at least seven fire companies to the scene. Winslow Township police closed off about a half mile of Mays Landing Road between Piney Hollow Road and the Hammonton border.

The building is on a rural road behind a home, which appeared unaffected. The commercial greenhouse appeared to be destroyed, and other buildings may have been damaged.

At the height of the fire, burning embers were falling at least a half-mile away.

Cause sought of NJ shore motel fire that killed 4

Fire-Rescue News

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. -Investigators at the New Jersey shore on Saturday will ramp up their investigation of a motel fire that killed four people.

Arson investigators from numerous agencies are trying to determine what caused Friday's early morning blaze at the Mariner's Cove Motor Inn in Point Pleasant Beach. Some of the investigators also probed the cause of a massive boardwalk fire about 10 miles to the south last September.

About 40 people were staying at the motel when the Friday fire started. Some had lost their homes in Hurricane Sandy.

The identities of the people killed could be released Saturday after they are officially identified and their relatives notified.

Eight others were injured, three critically. They include a woman who sought refuge in a running shower as she waited to be rescued.

Millville firefighters battle large fire, severe winds

Fire-Rescue News NBC40.net

Millville- Severe winds made it difficult for firefighters to battle a large blaze early Thursday morning.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. at a home on the 100 block of Cedar Street in Millville.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene to find the two-story house fully engulfed in flames.

Aside from the intense flames and smoke billowing from the home, firefighters also faced heavy wind gusts that kept the fire burning.

Authorities say everyone in the home managed to escape without injury, and officials with the Red Cross were on scene to assist family members.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
