Body found in Hamilton Township Fire

A body was discovered Saturday evening in Hamilton Township after a fire was put out in the area earlier in the afternoon, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said.

The location of the fire and body were not immediately disclosed, and the death has not yet been ruled a homicide, Housel said. An autopsy was scheduled for 5 p.m. today.

The Mizpah Fire Company was called at 1:40 p.m. to a fire near the intersection of Landis and Estelle Avenues.

The Major Crimes Arson Unit is investigating, Housel said.

Public Notice: Large Scale Search on Sunday and Monday

The Elwood Fire Company along with many other Atlantic County departments and organizations will be conducting a large scale search for missing local resident Joseph Herbert who has Alzheimer's.  The search will be on  Sunday December 18th between 8am and 3pm. And on Monday December 19th. between 8am to 3pm.

The public should be aware of searchers going through the woods and passing out flyer in the Elwood section on Mullica Twp.

Anyone with any information on where Joseph Herbert may be is asked to contact the Mullica Twp. Police Department immediately at 609-561-7600.

Bathroom vent fan causes fire at Hamilton Township's Festival shopping center

A small fire at the Atlantic Medical Imaging in the Festival shopping center in Mays Landing was started by a bathroom vent fan that had been left on, Hamilton Township police said in a news release.

Police said that authorities arrived about 1:30 a.m. Thursday in regard to a fire alarm. Cologne Fire and police entered the building and it was filled with smoke.

Fire investigators said the fire was started by a bathroom vent fan left on. The fan overheated, caught fire and dropped to the floor. That ignited a plastic clothes hamper, which burned and filled the building with smoke.

The building was damaged by smoke, but had no significant fire damage.

Cologne, Mays Landing and Laureldale fire companies responded.
