Posted: Sunday, December 25, 2011 8:55 pm | Updated: 12:29 am, Mon Dec 26, 2011.

VINELAND– A fire forced four people from their homes on Christmas, but firefighters extinguished the flames before their duplex could be irreparably damaged, officials said that night.
The blaze started shortly before 4:47 p.m. Sunday on the house on 400 block of Northeast Avenue in Vineland, Fire Department Lt. Wayne Fowler said.
Firefighters responded and had the fire under control by 5:27 p.m., Fowler said.
The two-story structure sustained fire, smoke and water damage that was heaviest on the top floor, he said.
Investigators have not yet determined how the fire started, but believe it was accidental, he said.
The Southern Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross also responded to help the four adults living there.

State police are investigating the cause of a serious single-car crash on the Atlantic City Expressway near milepost 28 in Hammonton this morning.

Police said the crash occurred about 5:15 a.m., when a single car driven by an unidentified man drove off the roadway and into the center median. The car then struck two trees with the driver's side door

The driver was trapped, but was extricated and taken by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center because the weather was too poor for a helicopter to fly, police said.

The unidentified man from Mays Landing is in critical condition, Sgt. Joseph Walters said.

Walters said there were no witnesses to the crash and the state police fatal accident investigation unit also responded.
