About 50 firefighters helped extinguish an early morning fire that damaged a Longport home.

A Longport police officer saw smoke at about 12:30 a.m. coming from an unoccupied home on the unit block of South Manor Avenue, borough Fire Chief Lefty Clayton said.

Firefighters from Longport, Margate, Somers Point and Northfield battled the fire, containing it by 2:15 a.m.

Fire Rescue News - Fire extinguished at makeshift campsite below Atlantic City Boardwalk

Fire-Rescue News

AC Press

Atlantic City firefighters extinguished a blaze beneath the Boardwalk on Saturday afternoon as daylight waned into what was expected to be the coldest night so far this fall.

Fire Department personnel responded to a 911 call at 3:45 p.m. for a fire under the Boardwalk near Morris Avenue. Within 10 minutes, crews put out the fire started at a makeshift campsite that was empty when officials arrived, Fire Chief Dennis Brooks said.

"People living under the Boardwalk, when they hear the sirens going, they get out of there and blend into the people walking on the Boardwalk," Brooks said.

No damage or injuries resulted from the fire, he said.

One mile northeast, a storefront remains shuttered since damaged by fires sparked beneath Schiff's Central Pier one year ago. Authorities believe the nighttime blazes Nov. 21 and Dec. 5 spread from small trash fires often set by homeless people for warmth.

Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed part of a residential property Saturday afternoon in the Venice Park section of Atlantic City.

Atlantic City firefighters responded at about 1:30 p.m. to the 1900 block of East Riverside Drive. They arrived to find flames had engulfed a semi-detached garage and spread to the siding of the single-level house there, Fire Chief Dennis Brooks said.

They brought the blaze under control within 13 minutes, but not before the roof of the garage had collapsed, Brooks said.

No one was hurt as a result of the fire, he said.

The property owner, listed as Dennis Morgan in current tax records, was the only person home at the time, Brooks said.
