PORT REPUBLIC - A local fire department was one of 11 emergency response organizations across the state to share in $872,663 in federal grants, the offices of U.S. Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez announced Wednesday.

The grants, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program included $118,890 to the Port Republic Volunteer Fire Company for operations and safety expenses.

The senators said the grants are awarded to fire departments and EMS organizations unaffiliated with hospitals. They are designed to improve the responders' capacity to protect the health and safety of the public and themselves during a fire.
