GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - An Atlantic City firefighter was killed in a one-car crash late Monday night, police said.

Kevin Evans, 39, was behind the wheel of a 1998 Dodge Durango that was heading east on Route 30 near Frankfort Avenue at 11:51 p.m. when police said it went off the road.

The SUV broke a utility pole, struck a concrete barrier and came to a rest in a drainage ditch just east of Frankfurt Avenue. Police said the only person in the vehicle, the driver Evans, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not immediately clear why the vehicle left the road. The weather was dry and clear and the vehicle sustained head-on damage, police said in a release. Evans was not wearing a seatbelt.

The crash closed the roadway for 2 ½ hours, police said, while the roadway was cleared and crews from Atlantic City Electric repaired the damage pole and restored power.

Evans is a fifth-generation firefighter and brother of former Atlantic City Mayor Scott Evans, himself a firefighter. Kevin Evans was sworn into the force in June 2007.

Kienzle said the homeowner was home when the fire started, but the fire was reported by several Havana Avenue residents when it started.

No one was injured in the fire, which remains under investigation.
