A small fire at the Atlantic Medical Imaging in the Festival shopping center in Mays Landing was started by a bathroom vent fan that had been left on, Hamilton Township police said in a news release.

Police said that authorities arrived about 1:30 a.m. Thursday in regard to a fire alarm. Cologne Fire and police entered the building and it was filled with smoke.

Fire investigators said the fire was started by a bathroom vent fan left on. The fan overheated, caught fire and dropped to the floor. That ignited a plastic clothes hamper, which burned and filled the building with smoke.

The building was damaged by smoke, but had no significant fire damage.

Cologne, Mays Landing and Laureldale fire companies responded.
