Emergency responders evacuated a business in Hammonton early Wednesday afternoon after a hazmat incident. ABC reports that 10 people were injured or sickened.

Police scanner broadcasts said a freon leak in the building had sickened multiple workers. The Press of Atlantic City reported that people on the scene complained of burning sensations, tightness in the chest and stinging eyes from inhaling the fumes, and that two people had to be airlifted from the scene.

A South Jersey Times photographer at the scene said that law enforcement and fire officials were working in and around Home Solutions, an infusion therapy business on the  1000 block of Grand Street, at about 12:30 p.m. A crowd of people stood outside watching the action, not far from the building. 

Hammonton police have not yet responded to requests for information. Officials say they will release a full report shortly.

Station 160 was dispatched to Hammonton for a cover up for their station 1. While en-route, E16-3 was diverted to Hammonton landing zone. E16-3 was diverted en-route, again, to the Hammonton scene. Upon arrival, man power from E16-3 was stationed at the man pool area. Crew from E16-3 assisted Hammonton with escorting facility personal in and out of the building. R16-2 went to Hammonton station 1 for cover. Once released by Hammonton command, R16-2 went to Hammonton scene to supply additional man power. Upon R16-2 arrival, man power from R16-2 was stationed at man pool area. No further action was taken and all Station 160 units were released by Hammonton Fire command and back in service without incident.

The Sunoco gas station at the Frank S. Farley service area on the Atlantic City Expressway cannot provide gas to customers, a spokesman from the South Jersey Transportation said.

A fire that erupted at the station on Saturday has damaged computers connected to the tanks and pumps, spokesman Kevin Rehmann said. He said the situation was a Sunoco issue, but said the gas pumps will be offline for at least a couple of days.

He said the issue has been posted on large electric message boards on the Expressway to inform travelers.

Jeff Shields, a spokesman for Sunoco, confirmed that electrical systems were damaged in the fire and pumps cannot work without the systems. He said there was no schedule as far as when the station will be able to sell gas again.

He said all work done to the systems has to be approved by an electrical inspector and fire inspector.

The Frank S. Farley service area, located on milepost 21.4, is one of two service areas along the Expressway. The other is the Atlantic City Visitor Welcome Center at milepost 3.5.
