A structure fire destroyed a Mays Landing home early Saturday.
The house, located at 4612 Somers Point Road, was reduced to a couple of chimneys. A detached garage was gutted.
Mays Landing Fire Chief Bob Hamilton said the home was a “total loss.” No one was inside the house and no firefighters were injured, Hamilton said.
The owner of the house lived next door and was doing renovations the home, Hamilton said.
Firefighters received a call of a possible forest fire – reported by duck hunters - around 4:45 a.m., Hamilton said.
But police arriving on scene identified it as a structure fire with heavy flames on all four sides, Hamilton said. All fire departments in Hamilton Township responded, as did Tanker Task Force A, which includes tankers from the eastern part of Atlantic County, Hamilton said.
Investigators couldn’t get inside the building because it was “too hot,” so a cause and location of the fire was still unknown as of 10:30 a.m., Hamilton said.
It took about three hours to extinguish the fire, Hamilton said.
A big challenge in putting out the fire was the location of the house, which was hundreds of feet from the street. That was why the tanker task force was activated, which laid 5-inch line down the long, winding driveway, Hamilton said.

Gloucester County (Correction: Atlantic County) children received lessons in safety, as part of national fire prevention week.
Students grades 2-8 of the Mullica Township school district are learning fire safety tips from the Elwood Volunteer Fire Company and electric safety from the personnel at Atlantic City Electric.
“We’re presenting to the children of the school so that they understand the hazards of electrical safety,” said Kurt Purthe, Supervisor of Safety Services, Atlantic City Electric. “How to mitigate those hazards or understand what the danger is to them and their family. So if they go home and share it with their family members, that’ll give them a leg up on keeping people safe.”
Atlantic City Electric has their own electric safety trailer, where they not only did demonstrations for the kids with the power lines, transformers, lights, and meters, but it’s also where they train their first responders and emergency personnel. Students had a chance to see first hand the dangers of high voltage wires.
“The community is well aware of what we do out there and the dangers we face and the dangers they can face,” said Jack Donil of Atlantic City Electric. “That’s basically why we come out.”

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — Fire officials are investigating a Saturday blaze at Mays Landing Country Club that temporarily disrupted a wedding party and routed golf guests.
The country club on Cates Road was evacuated after witnesses said flames from a barbecue in the club’s Grill Room shot up.
Jay Slotterback, who lives just blocks from the country club, said he was picking up a hamburger and BLT sandwich when he saw flames coming from where a man was grilling steaks.
“It was in the grill room behind the bar and I was waiting for my order, and when the flames shot up, the man was trying to get the steaks off the grill as fast as he could,” the witness said.
“He must have had 20 steaks on that grill,” he said.
Firefighters from Cologne, Laureldale and Mays Landing in Hamilton Township responded at 5:45 pm and Cardiff firefighters from Egg Harbor Township were called simultaneously for a report of a structure fire at the country club.
A wedding party was outside with about 40 guests and 25 to 30 golfers were inside for dinner, said Slotterback, who added that he eats takeout dinner from the country club once or twice a week.
“I think they saved the bride's cake,” Slotterback said.
“The bride and her party were outside getting pictures taken with the firefighters,” he said.
The exact cause of the fire had not been determined, and fire officials could not be reached Saturday night.
The country club recently was sold by the Frasier family who owned the popular reception area for decades.
“It's a shame for the new owners. They are extremely nice people,” Slotterback said.
Slotterback said he had to leave the country club before he could pick up his dinner order, and he and his girlfriend ended up ordering chinese food.

Last Call for John A. Nevius
It is with deep sadness that the Elwood Vol. Fire Company announces the passing of life member and former President John Nevius Sr. on Wednesday September 23rd from an auto accident. Our deepest sympathies go out to his friends and family.
John was well known within his community as a member of the Mullica Township School Board and Zoning Board. His most beloved contribution, however, was to the Elwood Volunteer Fire Company. He was a devoted member for 33 years and served as Secretary before becoming President. His faith was important to him, which led to missionary work with his church. He was part of the workforce that opened Resorts Casino and later worked as a Quality Assurance Specialist at Northrop Grumman. John will be remembered most for his constant banter, his love for his family, and his willingness to help anyone he met. He enjoyed spending his time reading, riding his motorcycle, and watching soccer.
He is predeceased by his parents: Kirk and Jean Nevius. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mary Nevius; his brother, Kirk Nevius and wife, Rosalee; his son, John Nevius, Jr.; his daughters Kathy Nevius, Adrienne Heuman, Kandi Snow (Henry Hasselhan), Jackie Mancinelli (Rich Mancinelli), Bethany Nevius, and Vanessa Denmead (Hank Denmead); and nine loving grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 28th. 2015 from 5pm until 8pm at Wimberg Funeral Home, 400 Liverpool Avenue, Egg Harbor City. A service will follow at 8pm. For directions and condolences, please visit wimbergfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's memory to the Elwood Volunteer Fire Company: PO Box 223, Elwood NJ 08217.
