ATLANTIC CITY - Like a scene out of a movie, smoke poured from the southern side of Schiff's Central Pier Saturday night while its grand entranceway was still bathed in light.

Firefighters were still battling the fire at the Boardwalk pier as of late Saturday night, with Atlantic City fire Chief Dennis Brooks estimating that "we think it's going to be a long night for us."

The fire was first reported at about 7 p.m., Brooks said, although it was unclear just where the blaze began - inside the 3 Brothers pizzeria or below the pier. Brooks said that when police first arrived, the pizzeria's owner and employees were fleeing the building after trying to battle it themselves with fire extinguishers....Continue Reading

HAMMONTON - A pilot walked away from an emergency landing in a blueberry field Saturday afternoon, police said.

Chris Watt, of Mullica Township, was practicing takeoffs and landings to and from the Hammonton Municipal Airport when the engine failed on his small plane, Patrolman Brian Grasso said.

He came down in a field near Mirtle Street and Route 206 at about 3:12 p.m., Grasso said. Watt, who was flying alone, was uninjured.

"When I got there, the guy was walking around," Grasso said.

Tight budgets and rising costs are apparently convincing once-skeptical Atlantic County municipalities to buy into a countywide central dispatch system for police and fire operations.

In fact, the proposal - more than a decade old - may become more extensive than originally envisioned.

The end result could be an operations center on the grounds of Atlantic City International Airport that also would handle dispatch duties for some Cape May County municipalities. The center also may serve as a regional transportation control network involving State Police and other law-enforcement and emergency management operations....Continue Reading

GALLOWAY TWP.--Luckily no one was injured when a car crashed into a medical supply building in Galloway Township Wednesday morning.

Officials say around 9:30 a.m. John Munton, 79, of Brigantine drove through the front of the Atlantic Medical Supply Store on the 300 block of Chris Gaupp Drive while parking his vehicle.

Munton and his 76-year-old wife were able to get out of the car and did not suffer any injuries, and witnesses say it's lucky no one was inside at the time, "We're just grateful because usually we have a room care specialist and he would be seeing patients this morning and they would be sitting waiting right inside that door. So thank god you know he scheduled to go to a meeting so there's nobody there."

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
