Saturday, May 30 2026 @ 10:22 pm EDT Fire/Rescue News - Wildfires in Southern CaliforniaFire/Rescue News - Fire causes $20,000 in damage to Brigantine homeFrom Press staff reports | Posted: Sunday, September 13, 2009 | 0 comments BRIGANTINE - A fire at a home on 22nd Street caused $20,000 worth of damage Sunday before firefighters contained the blaze. Five city firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the area shortly after noon Sunday and controlled it within 10 minutes. The flames appeared to start at the building's electrical meter, according to a news release from the Brigantine Fire Department. Fire officials contacted Atlantic City Electric to cut the building's power and remained on the scene for more than an hour to ventilate the structure. A fire official said there were no major injuries Sunday, but "someone banged up their thumb pretty bad." No other information was available. The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the release. Posted in Atlantic, Breaking on Sunday, September 13, 2009 9:50 pm Cape May, Cumberland fire companies to get federal grantsBy Press Staff Reports | Posted: Wednesday, September 9, 2009 | 0 comments Three southern New Jersey fire companies will share $186,328 in federal funding from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, U.S. Rep Frank LoBiondo announced today. Included in the grants is the first fire grant of $108,062 for the Town Bank Volunteer Fire Company/Board of Fire Commission District #2 in North Cape May. The Port Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Company is also receiving its second fire grant, this one for $39,055 for the purchase of safety equipment. The Willow Grove Fire Company in Salem County will receive its second fire grant from the AFG Program, totaling $39,211. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards grants directly to fire departments and emergency services to support their efforts to protect the communities they serve. The Fiscal Year 2009 program will distribute $565 million to first responder organizations across the country to obtain equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources required to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. To date, more than $19.5 million has been awarded locally to 114 organizations in the 2nd District since the program began in 2001.

Nobody was hurt. The fire started after employees at the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority left for the day. Director Charlie Norkis said the fire was probably sparked by the grinder, a giant machine that shreds wood pallets for mulch. Ground bits of metal in the pallet might have created an ember, he said. The Associated Press LOS ANGELES - A fire truck in Los Angeles has sunk into a large hole caused by a burst water main. Fire department spokesman Rich Matheney says the sinkhole was reported at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday. No injuries have been reported. Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Kim Hughes says the fire engine was responding to a 6-inch cast iron pipe break on a small residential street in the Valley Village neighborhood and didn't realize the ground was unstable.
