EGG HARBOR TWP. -- When disaster strikes, firefighters and first responders need to be prepared for the very worst. So Sunday afternoon, nearly 100 safety officials participated in a live victim rescue, where their skills were put to the test.

Firefighters practiced Sunday with mock serious accidents, including a cement mixer on top of a car, a tractor trailer on a mini van and chain reaction type incidents.

Officials say accidents like this happen every day and responders need to learn how to work together as a team for the safety of everyone involved.

Fire departments from Egg Harbor Twp., Galloway Twp., Northfield and Cape May Co. departments including Seaville and Marmora participated.

Police departments and ambulance squads were also on hand.

ATLANTIC CITY - Firefighter Jim McDevitt is tall and slim, and certainly doesn't fit the image of a guy who can put away a lot of food in a little time.

But he scarfed down four pounds of traditional breakfast fare in just 21 minutes Saturday afternoon, beating a field of eight other men and one woman in a challenge to raise money for...Continue Reading

EGG HARBOR TWP. -- A fast moving fire destroyed a home in the Bargaintown section of the township early Wednesday morning.

It was around 9:00am when multiple area fire departments rushed to scene on the unit block of Coronado Lane. Despite a rapid response, the flames were able to rip through most of the house, leaving it a near total loss. It's believed the homeowner was inside when it broke out, but was able to get to safety in time. No other injuries were reported either.

It's still unclear what may have sparked the massive blaze, but an investigation is ongoing.

ATLANTIC CITY---30 Atlantic City public servants are anxious to return to work after being laid off 6 months ago.

The Atlantic City Fire Department is expected to rehire 28 firemen and 2 women fire fighters but it's unclear when they will get back to work. Monday, the process to rehire began which included lots of paper work for people to fill out. However, officials are hopeful that they can place the firefighters at stations as soon as possible.

Battalion Chief Joe Rush said, "They all have to get finger printed again that could be a week or two, I've been told it could move relatively quickly, also been told medical paperwork could move quickly so I don't anticipate it will take a long time but it could take 2-3 weeks."

The safer grant recently awarded to Atlantic City Fire Department made the day possible and will also allow the recruitment of 21 additional firefighters. The grant totals 9.7 million dollars.

WILDWOOD -- A local firefighter is being hailed as a hero after saving a woman from a fast moving house fire Sunday night.

Mike Barth, a firefighter from Rio Grande, was off duty and driving home when he came across a duplex on the 400 block of West Taylor Avenue where a fire broke out around 7:30pm. While the other occupants from the second floor were able to make it out safely, Barth stepped in to help a woman on the first floor where the flames had started.

"I looked over and there was smoke coming out of the house and she was on the porch in shock. And I just did what anybody would do and try to help. My training kicked in and it just overtook me," says Barth.

The fire was brought under control in about twenty minutes, but the duplex has since been deemed uninhabitable.
