Man, 85, killed when tree he was cutting falls on him

MULLICA TWP. -- An 85-year-old man died Thursday morning when a tree he was cutting fell on him, township police said.

Ronald Loatwall was pronounced dead at the scene after police received a 911 call from his wife. He was cutting a tree in the yard of the couple's Baremore Road home.

"This event is being viewed as a tragic accident," police said in a press release.

Loatwell lived in Mullica Township for more than 50 years, police noted.

AtlantiCare EMS, Elwood Fire Department and Mullica Township public works responded to the scene.

Galloway home "total loss" after fire

A Galloway Township home went up flames Monday afternoon that resulted in a "total loss" for the owners, according to police.

Firefighters and police responded to the home located on S. Snake Avenue after neighbors called in the fire. No one was home during the fire, and there are no reported injuries. 

First responders on the scene said they were able to contact the owner around 3 p.m. on Monday. 

An investigation into how the fire started is currently underway.

EHT ShopRite reopens after fire prompts evacuation

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — ShopRite reopened Monday morning after a fire prompted an evacuation of the supermarket Sunday afternoon, a representative from the courtesy counter said. 

Smoke and flames rose from ShopRite’s roof as about 30 firefighters battled the fire.

No injuries were reported, authorities said.

Fire at Wharton State Forest grows to 2,800 acres, DEP says

The forest fire in southern Burlington County near the Batsto Village and fire tower has grown to 2,800 acres, the state Department of Environmental Protection said Friday. 

 As of noon, the state Forest Fire Service contained 60 percent of the fire, said DEP spokesman Bob Considine. The established containment area is an estimated 3,500 acres, he said. 

Batsto Village, the visitor center, and all trails including the Batona Trail are closed.

Hawkins Bridge Camp, Godfrey Bridge Camp, Lower Forge Camp and Mullica River Camp are also closed due to the smoke and ash from the fire.

Hammonton warehouse fire

The Elwood Fire Company along with many other fire companies was on the scene of a Thursday night blaze at a warehouse on Pine Road in Hammonton, police say.

The fire is burning at 10 p.m. in a warehouse on Pine Road between the Route 30 and Columbia Road, according to Police Chief Robert Jones of the Hammonton Police Department.

The warehouse is located in the western portion of Atlantic County.
