The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office described the unaccounted-for person as an elderly female. Two residents were taken to area hospitals.  Authorities did not provide identities for the injured as well as the missing one.

At around 11:30 a.m, authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting flames and heavy smoke from a house on 54th Street, between Landis and Pleasure avenues, according to Police Chief Thomas McQuillen 

Three side-by-side duplex homes, with a total of six units were damaged by the fire and smoke. Fire crews worked quickly to protect other neighboring homes on the block. 

Galloway Township police were the first on scene to a fire in the Ryan’s Ridge development on Second Avenue around 4:30 p.m. and evacuated the complex.

Firefighters from Galloway’s volunteer companies Bayview, Pomona and Oceanville also responded and were able to bring the fire under control under the direction of Galloway Township Fire Chief Richard Smith. Two of the residences are no longer inhabitable, according to police. A third unit sustained minor damage.

The fire is under investigation by Investigator Scott Feldman of the Galloway Township Fire Department, and Detective Lt. Joseph Picardi and Officer John Mooney of the Galloway Township Police Department Fire Investigation Unit.

Also responding to the scene were the Galloway Township Ambulance Squad, Galloway Township Emergency Management, Galloway Township Code Enforcement, American Red Cross and Atlantic City Electric.

At 4:20 p.m., a train traveling toward Atlantic City struck a vehicle that was on the tracks at the Line Street grade crossing.

None of the 120 riders and crew members on board the train at the time of the incident was injured, according to NJ Transit.

However, one person in the car was killed while another was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Hammonton police deferred comment to NJ Transit, whose police department is the leading agency investigating the accident.
