The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office described the unaccounted-for person as an elderly female. Two residents were taken to area hospitals. Authorities did not provide identities for the injured as well as the missing one. At around 11:30 a.m, authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting flames and heavy smoke from a house on 54th Street, between Landis and Pleasure avenues, according to Police Chief Thomas McQuillen Three side-by-side duplex homes, with a total of six units were damaged by the fire and smoke. Fire crews worked quickly to protect other neighboring homes on the block.
Clarence J. "Barney" Peterson, Jr 1924 - 2018Clarence J. "Barney" Peterson, Jr., 94, of Mullica Township passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 in AtlanticCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Division. Born in Nesco he was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Peterson was an army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the VFW Post 5043 and the Nesco Fire Company. Mr. Peterson was a carpenter by trade and he owned and operated Peterson and Mattle, Inc. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Kathleen Mary Peterson (Nee Helm); his son Jack Clarence Peterson; his daughter, Deborah Peterson; one sister, Margaret Wescoat; five grandchildren, Chelsey, Megan, Anna, Jack Jr.; Nicholas; two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Madalynn and his two sisters in law, Jane Peterson and Nancy Peterson. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 12:00 pm at the Carnesale Funeral Home, 202 S. Third St., Hammonton, where a viewing will be held from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the New Columbia-Nesco United Methodist Church, 3551 Nesco Road, Hammonton, NJ 08037.

Nesco Chief Carmen Merlino IIIFrom the Nesco Vol Fire Company's Facebook page It is with deep regrets, sadness, and heavy hearts the Nesco Volunteer Fire Company announces the sudden passing of Chief Carmen Merlino III. Chief Merlino III was a member of the department for 27 years, he loved serving his community. Chief Merlino III will be missed by many. Rest in Peace Chief and thank you for your service to our department and community. Arrangements are still being made and will be shared as soon as they are available. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Carmens family during this difficult time. The Elwood Vol Fire Company would like to express our deepest sympathy to The Nesco Vol Fire Company, the Merlino family and all of Mullica Twp. He will be missed. Fire in Galloway complex kills 3 pets and destroys two apartments
GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — Three pets died in a fire that left two apartments uninhabitable Friday afternoon, police said. Galloway Township police were the first on scene to a fire in the Ryan’s Ridge development on Second Avenue around 4:30 p.m. and evacuated the complex. Firefighters from Galloway’s volunteer companies Bayview, Pomona and Oceanville also responded and were able to bring the fire under control under the direction of Galloway Township Fire Chief Richard Smith. Two of the residences are no longer inhabitable, according to police. A third unit sustained minor damage. The fire is under investigation by Investigator Scott Feldman of the Galloway Township Fire Department, and Detective Lt. Joseph Picardi and Officer John Mooney of the Galloway Township Police Department Fire Investigation Unit. Also responding to the scene were the Galloway Township Ambulance Squad, Galloway Township Emergency Management, Galloway Township Code Enforcement, American Red Cross and Atlantic City Electric.
1 dead, 1 hurt after NJ Transit train strikes car in Hammonton
From the AC Press On-line HAMMONTON — One person is dead and another is seriously injured after a car was struck by a train Friday afternoon, according to NJ Transit. At 4:20 p.m., a train traveling toward Atlantic City struck a vehicle that was on the tracks at the Line Street grade crossing.
None of the 120 riders and crew members on board the train at the time of the incident was injured, according to NJ Transit. However, one person in the car was killed while another was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Hammonton police deferred comment to NJ Transit, whose police department is the leading agency investigating the accident. — John DeRosier |
