What makes the honor unusual is that the men are not firefighters, police officers or emergency medical technicians, but two ordinary guys who happened to be nearby when the fire broke out. George E. Hurden III, of Absecon, and Allen G. Holman, of Egg Harbor City, both employees of Atlantic County Concrete, said they were surprised to be honored for their action. The fire was reported at 9 a.m. and firefighters had it out nine minutes later, Lt. Steve Frei said. But the townhouse tenant - who had just moved into the home Thursday - burned his hands when he tried to put the blaze out himself with a fire extinguisher, according to Frei. The unidentified tenant didn't immediately call 911 after he discovered the fire, which allowed it to grow initially, but Frei says the man did the right thing by then closing the door of the burning bedroom. That move kept it from spreading further and allowed the Fire Department to make "a quick knockdown" once they were called, the firefighter added. The home, in the 4600 block of Harbor Beach Boulevard, has about $75,000 worth of damage, mostly from smoke, Friel estimated. Click here for more Photos From The Hammonton News: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 The Hammonton Fire Department conducted a joint training exercise April 7 with the Elwood Fire Company. The topic of this exercise was propane firefighting and the unique challenges it presents. This drill was made possible through cooperation with Allen's Propane of Hammonton and instructors from the Alloway Fire Department in Salem County, NJ. With roughly 50 firefighters attending, a live fire exercise was held simulating a propane tank on fire. The drill lasted approximately four hours with firefighters receiving a variety of both classroom and practical training. "With Suburban and Allens both in Hammonton along the border with Mullica we need to identify potential hazards. Once we identify these hazards we prepare through planning and training." said Chief Michael Ruberton. "We have a long-standing working relationship with Elwood and with Chief Tomasco's help we were able to get Allen's to donate the equipment necessary to perform the drill". Allen's propane supplied both manpower and equipment to facilitate this drill as a part of their ongoing commitment to Hammonton and South Jersey as a whole. The Fire Department has several training events scheduled for spring and summer, including an April trip to the Tony Canale Training Center in Egg Harbor Township for two live fire exercises. Fire Displaces EHT FamilyEGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - The Bargaintown Fire Department is still investigating what started a fire that displaced an Egg Harbor Township family and killed two pets Monday night. Chief Tom Nace said the fire was discovered in basement of a home on 320 Discovery Drive at about 10:30 p.m. The heat from the fire broke a water pipe, which flooded the basement and created a lot of smoke in the house. No people were were hurt, but a dog and a cat were lost in the fire, Nace said. All the utilities in the house were shut off and the family went to stay with relatives, Nace said. |
