Car hits 3-year-old girl in Hammonton

Fire-Rescue News

From the Atlantic City Press Published: Tuesday, July 15, 2008

A 3-year-old girl was in critical condition Monday night after she was struck by a car on 13th Street, police said.

The child's father went outside to get the mail from a box across the street at about 4:55 p.m. Monday, and the girl followed without his knowledge, said investigating Sgt. Sam Mavilla.

The girl, whose name was not released, ran in front of a car driving south on 13th Street, and was hit by the car, Mavilla said. The driver, whose name was also not released, is a 43-year-old local woman.

The child was airlifted to the pediatric trauma unit of Cooper University Hospital in Camden, and remained in critical condition Monday night, Mavilla said. No charges have been filed against the driver, Mavilla said. "It's an unfortunate, horrible accident," he said.

The Hammonton Rescue Squad responded to the scene and the Hammonton Fire company assisted with traffic control, police said.

From the Atlantic City Press Published: Thursday, July 10, 2008

NORTHFIELD - An explosion and flash fire at a June training drill that injured several firefighters has drawn attention from state and city officials, who looked into why firefighters weren't wearing oxygen masks at all times and why apparently no support was ever requested from the city Rescue Squad. A closed-door meeting will be held today between the Northfield Fire Department, Rescue Squad and other town officials to discuss the incident as well as the overall cooperation between the two departments, reportedly strained after the recent decision to allow the Rescue Squad to bill insurance companies for services.

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - Billy's Oak Grove Inn on the White Horse Pike accumulated plenty of familiar faces Wednesday evening, but not too many conversation topics. The demise of another traditional evening haunt, the Sweetwater Casino, seemed to be on everyone's mind.
"We kind of share customers," said bartender Mark Kasilowski, who worked for nine years at the 81-year-old riverfront restaurant. He got 26 related phone calls and messages Monday before 8 a.m. "It's like losing a member of the family."
