From The Atlantic City Press Published: Thursday, January 08, 2009

Hammonton  - An electrical fire forced the evacuation of St. Joseph's High School at about 12:40 Wednesday afternoon, Principal Lynn Domenico said.

A motor in the heating system caught fire in the basement, Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Lasassa said, and smoke filled two classrooms.

There were no injuries or serious damage. School will be open today, Domenico said.

The building was hosting a day for 139 prospective students. School staff and more than 100 current students were also in the building, most of them in a sports assembly in the gym when it was time to evacuate.

The power went out 20 minutes before the alarm, Domenico said, but it has been restored.

Crash with Trash Truck Injures Woman

Fire-Rescue News

From The Atlantic City Press  Published: Wednesday, January 07, 2009

Egg Harbor Township  -  A 29-year-old Atlantic City woman was injured in a car and trash truck accident on the Black Horse Pike early Tuesday morning, according to township police.

The accident took place at 6:17 a.m. near Chapman Ford in the Farmington section of the township, Sgt. Robert Gray said. Thomas Martin Jr., 34, of Manahawkin was driving a trash truck west and had stopped to make a left turn when the truck was hit in the back by a car driven by Vyvian Bui, Gray said.

Bui was trapped in her car and the Farmington and Cardiff fire companies had to use mechanical extrication equipment to rescue her. Bui suffered moderate head and leg injuries. The Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad and AtlantiCare paramedics took her to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City. Bui was listed in fair condition late Tuesday morning, according to Jennifer Tournetta, an AtlantiCare spokeswoman. Martin was not hurt in the accident, Gray said.

Traffic on the Black Horse Pike was delayed for two hours while the accident scene was cleared. Officer Paul Weldon investigated the case and issued a careless driving summons to Bui, Gray said.
