EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — The Towne Stadium 16 theater at the Shore Mall was evacuated Tuesday night after a fire broke out in a mechanical room closet, officials said.

The fire was reported at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, and firefighters arrived to find a small fire in a closet, Cardiff Volunteer Fire Department Chief Rob Winkler said.

Smoke could be seen coming from the building.

About a half-dozen firetrucks from the Cardiff and Bargaintown companies responded to the scene, and volunteer firefighters continued to work as snow began to fall. The Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad, Atlantic County Emergency Management and Egg Harbor Township police also responded.

As of 8:30 p.m., the theater was still closed. The manager declined to comment.
