Fire Rescue News- Ventnor Firefighters train in controlled burn

EGG HARBOR TWP. -- Fire prevention week for one group of firefighters means training themselves in fire safety, so that they can teach others.
The Ventnor Fire Department lit a controlled burn at the Tony Canale Training Center, and went step by step to extinguish it.
When the call comes in these are the men that put their life on the line to save yours.
"That’s why we do this, to save people,” said Ventnor Firefighter, Michael Tripician.
But it takes months of training, and continued practice to make sure they are the best that they can be.
"Just like anything you have to practice to make yourself better and more efficient.”

skills, by participating in a controlled burn.
"We are trying to push the fire out of the building, immediately stopping the products from combusting, smoke,” said Platoon Captain, Michael Cahill.
The fire was lit on the first floor of the building, where first responders attacked the blaze, and forced massive amounts of smoke build-up outside with water.
"You have to have a water supply, hook up the engine,” said Cahill. “And try to get the last known location of the victims."

While the fire was going on down below firefighters used a ladder to go to the second floor, where in a real fire they would make sure everyone living inside could get out safely.
"Its life safety, it's the first thing we do,” said Tripician. “So we go in there and make sure everyone is safe, that's why we do this, to save people."

But they say saving people begins long before a crisis occurs.
The department is preparing for fire prevention week and they say that educating others ahead of time can ultimately prevent an emergency in the first place.
"We just do our best to make sure people understand to use the tools you have. Smoke detectors, alarm systems, and use them to their fullest,” said Cahill. “But if we are out there, we are doing our best to help people."
The Ventnor Fire Department will be visiting schools, and retirement homes all week to continue to educate others about fire safety.
