second-floor unit at the Sandpiper Condominium complex off Harding Highway in Mays Landing.
Hamilton Township police Officer Belford Rivera and firefighter Mark Jenigen found Turchi on the floor of a rear bedroom in the unit, which had caught fire.
Members of the Hamilton Township Rescue Squad transported Turchi to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus, in Galloway Township, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
Turchi’s twin sister, Dina, died of cancer six months ago. Their relatives, who were not immediately available Sunday, formerly owned Cardiff Circle Liquors, now Calidini’s Fine Wines & Liquors, at Route 40 and Lincoln Avenue in the Cardiff section of Egg Harbor Township.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the blaze, but authorities said they extinguished it quickly and prevented it from spreading to other units. Two police officers were treated for smoke inhalation.
Members of the Cologne, Mays Landing and Laureldale fire departments also responded to the scene, as did AtlantiCare paramedics, according to the statement.
Police, fire and medical officials declined further comment.
