Fire Rescue News - Baby, woman hospitalized after early-morning Bridgeton fire

The woman and infant were trapped upstairs.

“The baby was handed to the firefighter out of third-floor window,” Scoch said. “The female jumped out on top of (the firefighter) and almost took all of them to the ground.”

The baby and woman were both flown to regional hospitals – the infant to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, the woman to South Jersey Regional Medical Center in Vineland. Both are expected to survive their injuries.

Scoch said the outcome could have been much worse.

“We could have gone from rescuing five people to having some fatalities,” he said. “There were some pretty good deeds done by the firefighters.”

The home sustained extensive damage to the fire side of the building. The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.

Bridgeton Police Department responded to the scene, as did Hopewell-Stow Creek, Gouldtown and Cedarville fire companies and an ambulance from Upper Deerfield Rescue Squad.
