Fred Durst, of Cape May, was driving north on the parkway in the right lane at 7:10 p.m. when his car left the road for unknown reasons, struck a guardrail at milepost 5 and came to rest on top of the guardrail, according to State Police at the Bass River station. The Rio Grande Fire Company extricated Durst from his vehicle.

The northbound lanes of the parkway were closed to allow the SouthStar helicopter to land, and Durst was airlifted to the trauma unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, where he was listed in critical but stable condition, police said.

The left lane opened at 8:39 p.m. and the scene was cleared at 9:12 p.m., the state Department of Transportation reported.

The State Police Fatal Accident Unit, the State Police Crime Scene Investigation Unit and the Troop E Construction Unit all responded to the scene, police said.
