2013 Elwood Vol Fire Company Golf Tournament

The Wescoats -  Forty-six year old, lifetime Nesco resident, Dan Wescoat needs our help.

Dan’s family dates back to the early years of Mullica Township history. Dan joined the Nesco Volunteer Fire Company 31 years ago when he was just 14. He has served the company in varying capacities throughout the years. Dan, a single parent of two adolescent boys, was recently elevated to Nesco’s Fire Chief this past January.

All of Dan’s years of experiences in the fire-rescue service could not have prepared him for what had happened in the early morning hours of February 3, 2013, when Dan’s oldest son and Nesco firefighter, Dan Jr. was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident on a snow covered intersection of Mullica Township. The 23 year old remained undiscovered for almost an hour before help arrived.

As a result of the accident, Dan Jr. broke his back in multiple locations and suffered severe chest trauma that required major surgery, Dan Jr. was kept in an induced coma for 4 weeks at Atlantic Care’s Trauma Intensive Care Unit. Once removed from the coma, Dan Jr. was placed in a critical care unit for the next 3 weeks. Dan Jr.’s spinal injuries left him paralyzed from the chest down and confined to a wheel chair. Dan Jr. has undergone months of intense physical therapy and contin-ues with a P.T. program at home. The Wescoats will require multiple modifications to their home to make it handicap friendly. Even with the aid of some insurance, the Wescoat’s medical bills and co pays are skyrocketing. A portion of this year’s golf tournament proceeds will help lessen the financial burden of our brother.
