Fire Rescue News - Officials believe fire displacing four in Pleasantville started with child playing with lighter

A child playing with a lighter in his bedroom is believed to be the cause of an accidental fire in Pleasantville that displaced four people, the fire department said.

Fire Capt. Charles Freeman said that the fire was reported at 5 p.m. at a single family ranch on the 1100 block of Iowa Avenue. Two engines and a ladder truck were soon on the scene, Freeman said, and the fire was under control by 5:10. The Northfield and Farmington fire departments assisted.

Three adults and the juvenile were displaced by the fire, Freeman said. They were being assisted by the Red Cross.

Four people were forced from their East Edgewater Avenue home Saturday afternoon after a fire started in their basement.

Firefighters from Pleasantville, Egg Harbor Township, Northfield and Absecon responded to the blaze at about 3:45 p.m. and had it under control about a half hour later, the Pleasantville Fire Department said.

The Red Cross is taking care of the family while authorities investigate the incident, firefighters said. No people or animals were injured.
