Mullica May Limit Stumping at Dump

From the Atlantic City Press Published: Monday, November 03, 2008

By ERIC SCOTT CAMPBELL Staff Writer, 609-272-7227

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - Ask the two guys running for Township Committee on Tuesday, and Mayor William Kennedy and Joseph Maultz will give you the distinct impression that campaigning at "the dump" has not figured prominently in their plans. Not everyone is so blase. The Weekstown Road transfer station is where most of this sparse Pinelands community's 6,000 or so residents drop off their garbage on the weekends and Monday morning. It's practically the only place in town with a consistent and predictable stream of people, the closest thing to a town center there is.

Majority Now Backs Change in Mullica Hiring

From the Atlantic City Press Published: Wednesday, October 29, 2008

By ERIC SCOTT CAMPBELL Staff Writer, 609-272-7227

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - A second round of discussion about whether to change government-hiring procedures yielded a change of heart and new majority support at Tuesday night's Township Committee meeting.

Mayor William Kennedy shifted in support of Committeeman Michael St. Amour's proposal to solicit job qualifications for the township's engineer, solicitor and auditor in 2009. This year and in years past, those contracted jobs were awarded by majority vote with no formal prelude.

Mullica Revokes Junkyard's License

From the Atlantic City Press Published: Wednesday, September 24, 2008

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - A junkyard was wiped off the map Tuesday night by a Township Committee that was almost as fed up with the property's long history of zoning violations as its neighbors were. The five-member panel voted unanimously to revoke the license of Vasilakis Junkyard at 4713 White Horse Pike. The move also makes any future owner of the property ineligible to obtain such a license.

Day in Court Settles Nothing for Mullica Mayor, Accuser

From the Atlantic City Press Published: Tuesday, September 16, 2008

By ERIC SCOTT CAMPBELL Staff Writer, 609-272-7227

FOLSOM - In the idle minutes before his assault trial was supposed to begin Monday morning, a chipper William Kennedy talked golf, anticipating the next of his twice-weekly rounds. Kennedy's accuser, Louis Vitale - himself accused of harassing Kennedy, Mullica Township's mayor - was less upbeat as he recounted a saga of medical attention in the three months between court appearances.

Skunk Shot by Police in Mullica Twp. Found to Carry Rabbies

From the Atlantic City Press Published: Monday, September 08, 2008

By ERIC SCOTT CAMPBELL Staff Writer, 609-272-7227

MULLICA TOWNSHIP — A skunk that chased a dog in a Nesco yard Tuesday had rabies, the 12th such diagnosis in Atlantic County and the third one in the township this year, tests confirmed Monday. A homeowner on the 2300 block of Columbia Road summoned police, who shot the skunk once, killing it, officials said. It was not known whether the skunk bit the dog, but the dog has received a rabies booster shot and is being monitored, said Pat Dillon, environmental health coordinator for Atlantic County.

The New Jersey Department of Health examined the skunk and diagnosed rabies, Dillon said.

Seventeen animals, including seven bats, nine raccoons and a skunk, were found to have rabies in Atlantic County in 2007, state statistics show.

Most of this year’s rabies cases have been raccoons, including the most recent incident Aug. 13. That happened on Wescoat Avenue, a block away from Columbia Road.

For information about rabies, call the county’s Division of Public Health at 609-645-5971.
