HAMMONTON - The trees lining Route 206 still show signs of the wildfire that damaged nearly 2,000 acres of the Wharton State Forest last year.
Most of the branches are devoid of foliage and the bark is scorched black.
But on the ground, species of rare threatened and endangered plant life are thriving thanks to the lack of the overhead foliage, or canopy, the wildfire provided.
Area environmentalist claim that not only was the arrival of these plants expected, but that portions of the Pinelands should be allowed to burn more often - in a controlled setting - to help the plants grow..... Continue Reading

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - A rusted He-Man garbage can. A used Pictionary game. An old Boy Scout canteen. An empty bottle of Mississippi Mud Black &Tan beer.
The members of local continuing political committee Keep Mullica Green hope these and other seemingly mundane items will help the candidates they support for Township Committee win their election bid come November.....Continue Reading

MULLICA TOWNSHIP -- A sword-wielding suicidal man kept a SWAT team at bay for an hour and a half Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Matthew Whalen, 25, was arrested about 6 p.m. outside a house on Pleasant Mills Road, next to the Mullica River. About 4:30, shortly after a companion called 911, officers arrived to find Whalen holding a three-foot-long martial-arts sword, Detective Sgt. John Thompson said.
Whalen was alone, speaking with township police, neighboring towns' officers in the Atlantic County Emergency Response Team and a standoff negotiator, threatening to commit suicide, Thompson said. At one point, he got in a canoe and began paddling away with the sword in his lap, then returned.
Whalen began threatening violence against the officers, getting close enough that they would have had to consider using deadly force, until a police dog subdued him enough to be arrested, Thompson said.
Charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and assault on a police canine joined the various weapons-related offenses Whalen faces. Thompson said he seized "10 different types of martial-arts weapons" from the house.
After a brief hospital treatment, Whalen was taken to the Atlantic County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - After months of public debating and accusations, the Township Committee passed a controversial "Parades and Public Assemblies" ordinance by a 3-2 split vote Tuesday night that will regulate where the public can gather on public property.
People or groups wanting to hold a "special event" on township property will now be forced to apply for a permit 30 days before their gathering and provide proof of liability insurance 10 days prior to the event. Any request for a permit can be denied "at the discretion of the township," which will have the authority to revoke any permit.
The Republicans on the Township Committee - Mayor Janet Forman, Deputy Mayor William Kennedy and Committeewoman Kathy Chasey - all voted in....Continue Reading

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - Residents have their say tonight on an ordinance that, if passed, will regulate private gatherings on public property - including the township's trash-transfer station, which often draws crowds on weekends.
Under the "Parades and Public Assemblies" ordinance, which is scheduled for a public hearing and final vote at
7 p.m., people or groups wanting to gather on township property would be forced to...Continue Reading

EGG HARBOR CITY - A father and son were arrested for drug distribution Friday after a lengthy investigation led police to their Philadelphia Avenue home.
At approximately 4 p.m. Friday, police served a search warrant at the Philadelphia Avenue residence of Donald and Daniel Peterson after more than a month-long investigation into the father and son's drug-related activities, Chief John McColgan said.
Donald, 52, and Daniel, 20, Peterson were found with more than 135 grams of marijuana, miscellaneous pills and drug paraphernalia, McColgan said. More than $800 in cash was also seized in the arrest, he said.
The investigation was conducted by Det. Steve Hadley and Patrolman Dylan Hutton, who were assisted by the state police and Det. Brian Zech of the Mullica Township police department.
The father and son were arrested without incident and released on summonses.
"This is an example of our ongoing efforts to rid Egg Harbor City of illegal narcotics," McColgan said

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - Elaine Frick heard the rumor at a family reunion - the grave site of her ancestors had been vandalized.
The grave site's headstone - which marked the final resting place of several members of the prominent Butterhof family - had stood undisturbed in the Egg Harbor City Cemetery since the late 1800s...Continue Reading
