Local News - Mullica man buys old school to fulfill late wife’s day care dream

MULLICA TOWNSHIP - Rita Messina dreamed of one day turning the Gertrude S. Laurer School - a vacant two-room schoolhouse down the road from her Darmstadt Avenue home - into a day care center.

The retired nurse died from cancer in 2007, a week shy of her 71st birthday and without having the chance to fulfill that dream.

"She loved children and always thought that that would've been a good location for a day care," said her husband, Tom Messina, 77. "But we never tried to go buy it."....Continue Reading

Local News - Bridge Spanning Mullica to Close for Repairs Thursday and Friday

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - The Lower Bank bridge will be closed to traffic, bicycles and pedestrians Thursday and Friday while crews install a new main drive motor to the bridge, Burlington County officials said. The drawbridge will remain up to allow boats to pass on the Mullica River.

Route 652 will be closed between Batsto-Bridgeport Road (Route 542) and Green Bank-Batsto Road (Route 563) while the work is done. Drivers are asked to use the Green Bank Bridge as an alternative.

HAMMONTON - The crowd began lining up hours before he arrived.
