An Atlantic County man heading to work at a Pennsylvania casino died Friday morning when his car struck the Atlantic City Expressway Toll Plaza in Hamilton Township and became engulfed in flames, police said.

Joseph Crawford, 39, of Egg Harbor City, was pronounced dead after the crash, State Police spokesman Lt. Brian Polite said.

son worked at Parx Casino in Bensalem, Pennsylvania and was driving to work Friday morning when the crash happened.

“I saw him when he left for work this morning and he was in good spirits. It was pay day for him,” Bruce Crawford said.

Crawford said his son was working at the Pennsylvania casino because he lost a part time and full time job in Atlantic City when the casinos closed.

The crash happened at 10:30 a.m. Friday as Crawford’s vehicle was traveling west through the toll plaza, Polite said.

The vehicle caught fire after it struck the toll plaza, he said.

Joseph Crawford graduated from Hammonton High School in 1995 where he was on the wrestling team.

He is survived by a brother Mikel Crawford and sister Shannon Askins, his father said.

A State Police trooper at the Atlantic City Expressway station said Friday morning that motorists on the Atlantic City Expressway reported an erratic driver. The driver was the same one that crashed into the toll plaza, police said.
