Gloucester County (Correction: Atlantic County) children received lessons in safety, as part of national fire prevention week.

Students grades 2-8 of the Mullica Township school district are learning fire safety tips from the Elwood Volunteer Fire Company and electric safety from the personnel at Atlantic City Electric.

“We’re presenting to the children of the school so that they understand the hazards of electrical safety,” said Kurt Purthe, Supervisor of Safety Services, Atlantic City Electric. “How to mitigate those hazards or understand what the danger is to them and their family. So if they go home and share it with their family members, that’ll give them a leg up on keeping people safe.”

Atlantic City Electric has their own electric safety trailer, where they not only did demonstrations for the kids with the power lines, transformers, lights, and meters, but it’s also where they train their first responders and emergency personnel. Students had a chance to see first hand the dangers of high voltage wires.

“The community is well aware of what we do out there and the dangers we face and the dangers they can face,” said Jack Donil of Atlantic City Electric. “That’s basically why we come out.”
