GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP — “Engine 1, dismissed.”

With that call, Kevin Evans’ fellow Atlantic City firefighters said goodbye.

midnight Labor Day. A cause of the crash has not been released.

One by one and then in pairs, more than 60 firefighters saluted Evans one last time inside Assumption Church. More than 200 people gathered inside Saturday, with nearly an entire section of the church filled with firefighters in their dress blues.

Evans’ twin brother, Sean, was unable to speak at the service, but had friend Ray Peaschek speak on his and the family’s behalf.

Peaschek — who works for the family’s concrete company — remembered once when Evans had them meet at Wawa for lunch.

“When we got there, Kevin was on top of his toolbox, dancing,” he said. “Just dancing in the Wawa parking lot. That was him. You just couldn’t be unhappy around him. He wouldn’t let you.”

He was also a great cook, “Right?” Peaschek said, motioning to the firefighters.

Laid with him was a signed chef's hat with the Atlantic City Fire Department logo.

Evans, who grew up in Brigantine, had been with the department for four years, and was a fifth-generation firefighter. One of his brothers, Battalion Chief Scott Evans, served briefly as Atlantic City's mayor.

At the end of the hourlong Mass, Evans’ casket was brought out as the Atlantic City Fire Department Sand Pipers played. Members of the department stood at attention. After a few moments, the group gave a final salute, and the truck was dismissed.
