A truck fire slowed rush-hour traffic Tuesday on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township.

The truck caught fire at about 4:45 p.m. near the English Creek Avenue intersection. The truck was in the left turning lane on the westbound side of the Black Horse Pike.

engine area, with the fire spreading to the interior dashboard and seating.

Atlantic County fire marshal Whitey Swartz got to the scene as the fire was spreading throughout the truck. Swartz said the truck had a full tank of gas - which is better because the fuel will burn.

"If the tank is empty, it will just blow up," Swartz said.

Swartz said pieces of plastic were popping off the truck and flying through the air. Glass shards could be seen in the billowing smoke.

Swartz said the driver was not in the truck at the time of the fire.

The Cardiff Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the fire before 5 p.m. and extinguished the blaze in a few minutes. Firefighters cautiously opened the hood of the pickup truck once the fire was extinguished.

Officals did not release a cause for the fire Tuesday night.
