5 p.m. and was under control within an hour. No injuries were reported.

One house was badly damaged and a second home sustained partial damage from the fire.

Neighbors said the residences were summer homes and currently unoccupied. They also speculated the fire was started by downed electric wires, but firefighters could not immediately confirm the cause of the fire.

A live wire laid near the homes and occasionally sparked. Smoke from the fire carried north over the island from winds reaching more than 40 mph and was visible from the mainland area.

"When I came outside and saw the fire shooting sideways, I thought the whole block was going up," said Dominic Piro, who lives across from the street.
