Retired Hammonton police Detective Anthony Scaltrito was charged Saturday night in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a 15-year-old boy Friday night in front of the 4-H Fairgrounds in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said in a press release issued Sunday.

  second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident and fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence.

The victim, Justin Montgomery, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:29 p.m., 17 minutes after the crash.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place Sunday afternoon.

Scaltrito was allegedly operating a black 2009 Dodge Dakota 4-door pickup truck traveling southbound when the collision occurred. The vehicle was seized by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, Housel said.

Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Kevin Hincks and Hamilton Township Detective Kristi Kinsey conducted the investigation.

Scaltrito remained lodged in the Atlantic County jail Sunday after Municipal Court Judge Robert Switzer set bail at $50,000 cash or bond.
