Jessica Timbal, 23, of Hammonton, was taking her 8-month-old baby to her car in the parking lot of the supermarket on the White Horse Pike at 10 a.m. July 11 when Burleigh put his hand over her mouth and held a knife to her stomach, Assistant Prosecutor Diane Ruberton said. He told her to get in the car, but Timbal refused. Burleigh then fled into a wooded area behind the supermarket.

Hammonton police found Burleigh in the woods a few minutes later, Ruberton said. He fought with the officers before they arrested him.

Burleigh was indicted in October and is being held in the Atlantic County Jail pending his sentencing Jan. 15.

Burleigh served about two years in prison on burglary and other charges, according to the state Department of Corrections Web site. He was released from South Woods State Prison in Sept. 2007.

He is also a convicted sex offender, and plastic gloves and thick string were found in his car, authorities said after his arrest in July.
