It was a reunion that some had feared may not happen, "It's great," said firefighter Jeff Bird, "it's great to see that they're doing well," after two young brothers were left fighting for their lives when they were trapped in an Atlantic City apartment fire.

"Thank you for saving me," said 8 year-old Adalid Barahona.

"I don't think that I'll ever forget it," said Bird, "that's for sure."

It was nearly two weeks ago that the brothers were asleep inside their South Carolina Avenue apartment when the fire broke out. They say they don't remember much, but do remember being rescued. "They broke through the window," said 9 year-old Edwin Barahona.

"I heard the window breaking," said Adalid, "and they pulled me out of the window."

After being hospitalized for more than a week, the boys had one wish, to meet the firefighters who saved them. Bird was the one who risked his life to rescue the boys and is relieved to see them doing well. "It was hard," he said, "you know, you can't get any information from the hospital."

"To see them now, compared to how I saw them a couple of weeks ago, this is a blessing, absolutely a blessing," said Captain Craig Johnson, "because a lot of times, things don't come out as good as this time."

Today the family, who lost everything in the fire, was presented with a few gifts and thousands of dollars in donations from the department and from a fund set up by Bird's wife. "It's a beautiful action that they did here today," said the boys' mothers, Mayra Sepulveda, through a translator.

The kids got to have some fun with the fire trucks and now know what they want to be when they grow up. "A firefighter," said Adalid.

And while today's meeting may've been brief, these kids are now part of the Atlantic City firefighter family, they'll be having dinner at the firehouse Sunday night, and we're told the crew is making sure the boys will have one of the best Christmases ever this year.
