It’s hard to believe that it’s time for the annual 4-H Fair! The 2010 Atlantic County 4-H Fair is Thursday through Saturday, August 5, 6, & 7. It is open from 12:30 PM to 10 PM on Thursday and Friday, and 11 AM to 11 PM on Saturday at the David C. Wood 4-H Center and Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are located at 6210 Route 50 in South Egg Harbor, located between Routes 322 and 30.
Since 1958, thousands of visitors have enjoyed the Atlantic County 4-H Fair at this location. The Fair has grown and changed, but there is still no admission fee or fees for any exhibits, shows, or public events. The 4-H Fair serves multiple purposes. First and foremost, it gives our 4-H members the opportunity to exhibit the knowledge and skills that they have developed in their 4-H project area(s), whether that is a 4-Her showing a dog or exhibiting his or her best photographs. The Fair also offers the occasion to educate the public about 4-H and information on how to get involved.
Schedules of daily events such as dog, horse and livestock shows are available at the entrance gate or at the information booth in the 4-H Center. Twirling, Clogging, Tae Kwon Do, small engines and tractors, model trains and other 4-H clubs compete and perform. The 4-H Center and the big tent (for the youngest 4-H'ers) are packed with exhibits, activities for visitors, demonstrations and performances. Other 4-H buildings house a variety of animals including horses, dogs, herpetology, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits and small animals. Most animal tents have a petting area and information about how to join 4-H.
There will be displays and activities to promote and emphasize the 4-H S.E.T. (Science, Engineering, and Technology) initiative and activities. 4-H SET balances our traditional agricultural roots with emerging areas in science and technology. Government, industry, and community leaders demand for increased emphasis on science, engineering, and technology is a growing priority as workforce demands change.
Atlantic County Government, Rutgers Cooperative Extension – Master Gardeners, Atlantic County Library, Parks and Recreation, Mosquito Control, and other non-profit organizations and commercial vendors have displays, information, contests and free gifts – as well as items for purchase, if you choose. Atlantic County 4-H advisory groups and Galloway Kiwanis provide a variety of food and beverage selections.
The Fair is sponsored by the Atlantic County 4-H Fair Association in support of the 4-H Youth Development Program of Rutgers Cooperative Extension. 4-H Members, volunteer Fair chairs, 4-H Club Leaders and parents work together, making this the largest event in Atlantic County 4-H.
