Firefighters 'seriously injured' after ALS Ice Bucket Challenge goes wrong

Fire-Rescue Alert

This is the moment the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge went wrong

Captain Tony Grider, 41, and firefighter Simon Quinn, 22, remain in hospital recovering from "serious injuries" after they were shocked by electricity from a power line as they doused students with water.

The members of the fire crew were inside the bucket of their engine's ladder when the accident occurred at around 11am yesterday, at Campbellsville University in Kentucky, US.

Captain Grider and Mr Quinn were taken to Taylor Regional Hospital and then transferred to the University of Louisville Medical Center Burn unit.

a critical condition and Mr Quinn's condition is stable, Campbellsville Police Chief Tim Hazlette said.

No students were hurt.

Two other firefighters, Captain Steve Marrs, 37, and Alex Johnson, 28, received electric shocks when they tried to lower the bucket and an electric current traveled down the extended ladder, Mr Hazlette said.

Both were taken to Taylor Regional and Captain Marrs, who has been with the department for 11 years, was later released, while Mr Johnson, who has served for three years, was admitted for observation.

The incident remains under investigation but the ladder is believed to have never touched the power lines. There was a power cut in the community for several hours after the incident.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge began in America and has since become a internet sensation with celebrities from across the world soaking themselves with ice cold buckets of water to raise money for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association.

Students from the university's band had decided to complete their challenge with a difference and asked their local fire team to soak them with hoses from above.

In a statement Campbellsville University President Michael Carter said: "We express heartfelt sympathy and prayers for the families of the two firefighters who were injured."

The university's Baptist Campus Ministry also held a prayer service on Thursday evening.
